hurts when used?

I decided to buy a and when I went to use it, it hurtt so bad...my friend told me to put a condom on it cause it supposedly helps? I did that and it still hurt but even worse...should I put lubricant on it or is there something better to use? I know the size and length are alright but it seems like there's too much friction going on down there...any tips?
