How can you equate eternity in Hell with a parent punishing their children?

I see it ALLLLL the time. Christians claiming "God loves all his creations but if you don't obey him he must punish you. It's the same as a parent punishing a child for misbehaving". Of course this is paraphrased. There's countless different versions of the same argument. The point is, when my kids misbehave I don't light them on fire.
